I consider Anthony Burgess to be probably the greatest Mancunian of living memory. There are many competitors, it is true, but Burgess gets my nomination. His is an extraordinary story of literature and music, of Moss Side, Catholicism, scholarship, apostasy, and then a life that reached via Malaya to the hills of Hollywood and the clubs of Monaco; A Clockwork Orange, Enderby and Jesus of Nazareth.
