To mark the 50th anniversary of the first release of Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of A Clockwork Orange, we present a weekly online series Anthony Burgess at the Movies in which we zoom in on Anthony Burgess’s interest in cinema.
In this episode of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation podcast, we explore the influence of cinema on Anthony Burgess’s writing. Burgess was one of the first generation of writers to grow up with cinema, and his writing engages with films and the film industry in interesting and unexpected ways.
This episode of the podcast also uses some little-heard recordings of Burgess, taken from the sound collections at the Burgess Foundation. He reads from a section of his novel about the silent cinemas of Manchester, The Pianoplayers, to a delighted audience in Toronto, and talks about films such as 49th Parallel, Metropolis and more at an event at the British Film Institute. You can hear one of the songs from Burgess’s lost musical film about the life of Shakespeare, and hear him bemoaning the plight of the lowly screenwriter.
The Burgess Foundation Podcast explores Anthony Burgess’s life and work through thematic discussions and interviews with writers, literature experts, and other people who have encountered Burgess and his work in different contexts.
