For three years the International Anthony Burgess Foundation and the University of Salford have been collaborating to present the MA module ‘Anthony Burgess and his contemporaries’, which offers students the opportunity to study Anthony Burgess as a satirist, novelist and critic in light of the writing of his contemporaries such as Chinua Achebe, Alasdair Gray, B.S. Johnson, V.S. Naipaul, and Muriel Spark. Many of the sessions are taught at the Engine House venue, and an important part of the module involves developing the skills to undertake practical research in the Burgess Archive at the Burgess Foundation.

We’re delighted to publish an excellent essay by Johnny Mills which he submitted for the module. ‘Anthony Burgess: the colonial postcolonialist?’ looks at Anthony Burgess’s Malayan Trilogy in relation to other texts from the period, notably The Heart Of The Matter by Graham Greene, and suggests that Burgess’s foregrounding of the colonised and their languages in his writing positions Burgess at the intersection between colonial and postcolonial discourses.
