The Anthony Burgess Foundation is pleased to announce a new collaboration with Incline Press, one of Britain’s best-loved letterpress printers. Under the title ‘Occasional Essays and Poems of Anthony Burgess’, this series of letterpress printed books will present a selection of rare Burgess works in handsome limited-edition volumes.

Our previous collaboration with Incline Press was an illustrated broadsheet poem to celebrate Burgess’s centenary in February 2017. The broadsheet consisted of an extract from Burgess’s poem An Essay on Censorship, printed from metal type and accompanied by a linocut portrait of Anthony Burgess by John Watson.

Incline Press, which has been publishing since 1995, is operated by Graham Moss and Kathy Whalen. The press, which is based in Oldham, has published hand-printed editions of works by Jamie McKendrick, Matthew Hollis and Vona Groarke, among many other distinguished poets and prose-writers.

The first book publication in the Anthony Burgess series is An Elegy for X, a poem originally written by Burgess for a Faber & Faber art publication titled Hockney’s Alphabet, edited by Stephen Spender and David Hockney. This new edition of the poem appears with calligraphy by the artist Stephen Raw, an artwork by John Watson, and an introductory essay by Dr Graham Foster from the Burgess Foundation.

An Elegy for X is hand-printed in a limited edition of 200 numbered copies. The first 50 copies will be hardbacks. The book is available from the Burgess Foundation’s café, or online from the Incline Press website (details below).

The next two titles in the Incline Press series will be a new selection of Burgess’s essays on James Joyce, including some newly-discovered unpublished work, and the complete text of An Essay on Censorship, a long poem in heroic couplets, written by Burgess in the aftermath of the Satanic Verses affair in 1989.
