Exhibitions. New writing. Concert commissions. Academic research. Public events, in venues and online. And at the core of everything, preserving and promoting our extensive Anthony Burgess archive.
Your donation to the Burgess Foundation supports our mission to promote the life and work of Anthony Burgess in so many ways.
Earthly Powers is Anthony Burgess’s longest and most ambitious novel. This epic saga, which takes in two world wars and some of the darkest moments in twentieth-century history, is regarded by many as Burgess’s masterpiece.
Throughout 2020, the International Anthony Burgess Foundation is celebrating the novel’s fortieth anniversary. We are working in partnership with Manchester City of Literature and the UNESCO Creative Cities network to engage a new generation of readers around the world.
As part of these celebrations, the Foundation is setting up an online reading group, which aims to guide readers through the novel. The reading group is open to everyone, and we are particularly keen to encourage new readers of Burgess and Earthly Powers to take part.
The reading group will meet online in a chat room. It will be hosted by staff from the Burgess Foundation, and it will provide an opportunity to discuss the book in detail.
The Burgess Foundation has already launched a range of other activities surrounding Earthly Powers, including the Earthly Powers Podcast series, a Wiki annotation project, and new articles on our website.
The schedule for the reading group is:
Thursday 23 July 2020 (6pm BST): Chapters 1 to 31
Thursday 20 August 2020 (6pm BST): Chapters 32 to 50
Thursday 17 September 2020 (6pm BST): Chapters 51 to 64
Thursday 15 October 2020 (6pm BST): Chapters 65 to 82
