We are pleased to invite you to a summer party to celebrate the publication of The Clockwork Testament. This is the latest volume in the Irwell Edition of the Works of Anthony Burgess, published by Manchester University Press.
In this comic novel, the poet Enderby, writer in residence at the fictional University of Manhattan, takes on Hollywood, TV chat shows, and American culture when his screenplay for The Wreck of the Deutschland is accused of corrupting the morals of young people. There are wry reflections on Burgess’s experience of being in the firing line when Kubrick’s controversial film of A Clockwork Orange was released.
The editor of the book, Ákos Farkas, will give a short talk about the novel and its place within the canon of Anthony Burgess’s work.
We will also be celebrating the publication of three other Burgess books which have appeared in 2023: A Shorter Finnegans Wake (Galileo), Two Plays: Chatsky and Miser, Miser! (Salamander Street), and The Wanting Seed (Penguin Classics).
