Concert: Common extraordinary things – music by Laurence Crane and others

Laurence Crane, one of the UK’s foremost contemporary composers, has been described as building “graceful, cheeky, elusive music out of ordinary things.” His works represent something extraordinary with commonplace objects. As he himself has said of his work, “The materials may seem familiar – perhaps even rather ordinary – but my aim is to find a fresh beauty in these objects by placing them in new structural and formal contexts.”

The music in this concert is simple, but a little bit extraordinary. The music feels somehow familiar, but it is highlighted, segmented and framed in such a way that these common objects begin to appear extremely uncommon.

Alongside Crane’s Octet and Piano Piece no.23 ‘Ethiopian Distance Runners’, are works by other composers which similarly bring together the common and the extraordinary.

Featuring: David Horne – piano; Benjamin Draper – conductor; members of Hive Sinfonia

Location: International Anthony Burgess Foundation, 3 Cambridge St, Manchester, M1 5BY

Date and Time: Wednesday 16th October, 19:30 doors, 20:00 concert

Ticket pricing: £10 (full price), £5 (concessions), £0 (no-one turned away)
