In Grace Under Pressure, Burgess tackles the subjects of Ernest Hemingway’s life, work and death, visiting Hemingway’s house in Key West and the scene of the writer’s suicide in Ketchum, Idaho (where Mary Hemingway had refused entry to Burgess and the film crew). Timed to coincide with the release of Burgess’s biography about Hemingway, the film assesses Hemingway’s achievements and offers an explanation of the reasons behind the author’s death. Written and presented by Anthony Burgess for the South Bank Show, the film was broadcast in 1978 and directed by Tony Cash. Part of the Burgess on Screen exhibition season. Running time: 60 minutes.
