Manchester is renowned for its expansive urban regeneration efforts, with Victoria North standing out as a prime example. This ambitious, residential-led project in North Manchester aims to deliver 15,000 new homes over the next two decades. As one of the largest regeneration initiatives in northern England, it raises important questions: How do local communities feel about these transformations? And what are their aspirations for Manchester’s future?
We will be screening Collyhurst Voices, a community-produced film that explores the history and impact of neighbourhood change in Collyhurst, North Manchester. Through the voices of residents, the film offers valuable insight into the lived experiences, local heritage and hopes for the community in Collyhurst. It explores whether the area’s regeneration can bring about holistic, positive change for both existing and new members of the community.
Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion with community groups and residents who contributed to the film, offering a platform for their voices and perspectives on urban transformation. This will be a valuable opportunity for students, residents, and anyone interested in shaping Manchester’s urban future to come together, share ideas, and envision alternative collective futures for our communities.
We would like to thank Collyhurst Community Enterprises for their generosity in allowing us to screen their film. This showcase is curated by Manchester Urban Film Series with the support of the Manchester Urban Ageing Research Group and HOMeAGE, a Marie Curie Sklodowska Curie Actions Doctoral Network, funded by the European Commission.
Non-alcoholic refreshments and catering will be provided, including vegan and vegetarian options.
Manchester Urban Film Series is an interdisciplinary collective of PhD students partnering with local community groups in Manchester to curate film screenings and foster discussions about social justice and the city.
