Sonata No. 3 for Great Bass Recorder and Piano was written in 1993, the last year of Burgess’s life.
Inspired by the interest of his son, Andrea, in wind instruments, this sonata is part of a series of works for the instrument, which is more usually found as part of a larger recorder group.
Burgess treated the great bass recorder rather like a bassoon and attempted to explore its full range of notes and expression. This sonata combines various musical styles and offers enjoyable challenges to intermediate players.
